Unless you've been living under a rock, you know the iPad 2 is coming out soon, and I'm pretty sure I'm getting one. I never ended up with an original iPad, so I think it's time to treat myself to an early birthday present. I don't think I'll get it at launch, but hopefully soon after. Bit excited!

Have started sending some job applications out. Nothing too full on yet, but we'll see how we go.

More excitingly, yesterday I was allotted four seats to be part of The 7PM Project audience next Thursday! The studio is on Chapel St, so some friends and I are going out for drinks first, off to the show, and then out for dinner afterwards at The Oriental Tea House. Mmm, dumplings. I'd never had dumplings until I moved to Melbourne, and I can't believe what I've been missing!

Long weekend this weekend in Victoria, about which I was unaware until someone mentioned it off-hand at work on Monday. I'm going on a brunch date Saturday on Chapel St, and will probably have brunch in St Kilda with my housemate on Sunday to start scoping out our new suburb. Other than that, I'll hopefully spend the rest of it getting ready to move.

My housemate and I got approved for a place to rent in St Kilda yesterday! We pick the keys up March 25th. The waiting sucks a little bit, but I guess it means less overlapping rent that we have to pay. I'm excited to be living closer to the city and in a more cosmopolitan area! Fitzroy St (about a block away) is famous for its cafes etc., and we're quite close to the beach, the Palais Theatre and Luna Park.

Now the jobhunt begins... My contract with Telstra has been extended to June 30, but after that with a reorganisation going on, there's not much they can promise after that. There are a few good looking positions around at the moment, so I think I'll throw my hat in the ring for those and see what happens, even though it's a little bit early.

I went to inspect three places in St Kilda this morning. The first one wasn't any good, so we won't bother applying for it. The second and third were nice, though. We were able to fill in the application for one ahead of time, and the other we'll email tomorrow or Monday morning. Fingers crossed!

Other than those inspections, I'm very deliberately having a quiet weekend at home. Last weekend was huge and really wore me out. Since moving to Melbourne, I can't actually remember the last time I had a truly relaxing weekend. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed myself; I've loved being busy and doing things. I just need a weekend off to let my body catch up.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe it's been over a year since I've updated here! So long that I can't really remember why I stopped... So much has happened, though.

I guess I should do a quick life update! In October last year I moved from Tamworth, NSW, to Melbourne, Victoria. I decided I needed to move to the city after realising that no, I'm really not a country kid at all! Almost six months later I can safely say it's the best move I've ever made.

There's always something to do! I love it. And of course I have to admit that I'm enjoying the gay clubbing. ;) I'm working as a contract web developer for Telstra (Australia's leading telco), which I'm also loving. It's such a change (and improvement) from my last job.

What's new with you guys?!

To my non-Australian friends (particularly Americans), if someone told you something was 'true blue', would you understand what that meant? Even if you would personally, is it something the unwashed masses would get?

I'm so looking forward to my time off over Christmas. My last day is the 23rd then I'm off until January 11th. As much as I rant, I do like my job, but by God I'm ready for some time off. If nothing else, it'll be nice to just catch up on sleep. Between work and socialising on the weekends, I'm exhausted.

Have had a fair bit of boy drama the last few weeks. Have decided to make myself move past it, and I think it's working!

I bought the Broadway Wicked soundtrack the other day and I'm in love with it. Popular, No One Mourns the Wicked and For Good in particular. And of course Defying Gravity, but that goes without saying. I've decided that I'm going to see the production in Sydney next month even if I have to go on my own. It won't be the same as if I got to see Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth on Broadway*, but beggars can't be choosers.

* Any Americans, particularly New Yorkers, who didn't take the opportunity to see this, I don't think we can be friends anymore.

Lazyweb, I have need of you! What are your favourite Christmas songs/albums? I'm totally a sucker for Christmas songs and I'd like to buy/acquire a few albums for this Christmas.

I'm pretty open as to the type of Christmas songs I like. I'm not huge on the overtly religious stuff, but my heathen ears won't shrivel at the sound, either. I also like to sing along, so songs in, say, Aramaic are probably right out.

I've spent the entire day tired and irritable, mostly due to a lack of sleep. The lack of sleep is entirely my own fault, but I'm too tired and irritable to care.

If by some horrible twist of fate I end up with a child and start to think it's a good idea to change my Facebook status to something about how proud I am that my son didn't piss his pantssuccessfully used the potty, someone do me the decency of shooting me.

For anyone who already has Google Wave, I'm wyntarvox over there.

I've also got a few Google Wave invites if anyone needs them! Leave your email address and I'll put it in for processing. It takes a few days for the invites to be received.

I have been catching up on Vampire Diaries the last week or so. It's fun so far, but something happened in 1x09 that I really didn't like.

I wasn't aware the iPhone has a built-in gaydar! I was typing a message and accidentally typed 'bette' while trying for 'better'. My iPhone auto-capitalised to 'Bette'.

iPhone is the wind beneath my wings.

Wicked!

I went to lunch with a friend today (Alyce) and I mentioned off-hand how a) I wanted to see Wicked and b) I want to go for a trip to Melbourne at some point. She just about fell off her chair saying she wanted to see Wicked so bad and also would like to see Melbourne at some point!

My original plan was to go to Wicked in Melbourne and kill two birds with one stone, but I hadn't realised that it had already been to Melbourne before coming to Sydney. So the current tentative plan is to fly to Sydney one Friday after work, see Wicked at the Capitol Theatre, then fly down to Melbourne Saturday morning, spend the weekend there doing Melbourney things and then come back Sunday night. Exciting!

I'm also taking tomorrow off to go to Port Macquarie for my grandfather's 80th birthday. It'll be good to catch up with some family that I haven't seen for a while, and the beach is always nice. I love Port. I love long weekends away.

I'm probably going to Festival of the Sun in Port mid-December, and a trip to Bathurst some time soon to catch up with friends. Busy, busy.

Today I decided to set up dual-boot Windows XP and Ubuntu for the fun of it. When I went to repartition my hard drive, there was ~120gb of unallocated space. I have absolutely no idea how that happened. I don't ever recall partitioning that off at all, but I guess I must have. Yay for a surprise 120gb!

I also went to buy an external hard drive today. I will have 1TB of additional storage space some time next week when it comes in.

NaNotWriMo

[personal profile] afuna started a bit of a thing amongst Dreamwidth developers where instead of doing NaNoWriMo proper, they're aiming to submit 30 (or whatever) patches during the month of November. I've decided to try something similar!

November is actually going to be quite busy for me, so 30 patches would likely be unrealistic. Instead, I'm going to aim to review at least 30 patches in November. I haven't reviewed much, but with the extra people trying to get their 30 patches in this month, there should be heaps of stuff to review.

This is my tracking post!

Okay, it wasn't really therapy, but it makes me feel better about spending the money if I tell myself it was... I bought a tie, cuff links and handkerchief set today from a place down in Melbourne. Hopefully they'll arrive before next Tuesday. I've taken the day off work to go to the local horse race track for their Melbourne Cup Day with some friends. A few weeks ago I bought myself an amazing new suit, and this will be my first chance to wear it. Very exciting!

I'm going to Newcastle next week to visit some old uni friends. I love these girls and I haven't seen them in so long, so it'll be great. My sister also recently semi-moved to Newcastle, so I'll see her as well. I haven't really been to Newcastle much, even though it's only a 3.5 hour drive from here. I'll probably go more now that I have quite a few friends and family there.

Sort of broke AJAX ESN on Dreamwidth today with a code push, but I was able to fix it easily and Mark pushed the patch live not long after. The end result is that AJAX ESN/comment management now works in S2 with text-based links and not just image-based ones! I also added an option for community maintainers to chose whether a "Post to this community" link and a "View this community's posting guidelines" (the entry for which can be set by maintainers) after someone joins/subscribes to the community.

I know I have a few Stargate fans on my flist so I want to ask, so far, what do you think of Stargate Universe?

My brief thoughts, probably not spoilery, but just in case... )

Where did all these dust storms suddenly come from? I can smell it, and worst of all I can taste it, and we've got all the windows shut! Pretty sure it's also giving me a headache. Luckily I downed some paracetamol at home at lunch time so that's not as bad anymore.

I'm loving daylight savings right now. It's nice to come home and still have a few hours of daylight. I don't really need the daylight, since I don't have much to do outside during the week after work anyway, but it makes the time between finishing work and going to bed feel longer. When I get home and it's already dark, it just feels like I have dinner and go to bed. I know I don't actually have anymore time than before, but it feels longer.

Wicked is playing in Sydney soon and I would really, really love to go but I don't know if a) I can afford it and b) I can find someone to go with. I should work on this. I think I'd really regret missing the opportunity to go see it.

I completely missed that it was National Coming Out Day (and given that the UK celebrates on October 12, I'm going to assume that we will too, so I'm not late).

I came out "completely" a few months ago. Until then all of my friends and most of my extended family knew, but I hadn't told my parents. I posted about it at the time, so I won't go over the story again except to say that it was completely fine and all the anxiety was unfounded.

Until I told my parents I thought I was comfortable with myself. I didn't feel like I was pretending to be anyone else, because I thought I was completely being myself except they didn't know I liked guys. No huge deal, right? I was so surprised at exactly how much weight was lifted off when I did tell my parents.

I don't really act any differently now they know and I think I'm just as much myself as I was before, except that I don't have to be careful about my choice of words when talking about relationships etc. It's also much easier not to have to dodge the marriage/children/girlfriends conversations.

I know that compared to a lot of people, my coming out turned out to be really easy and I'm so thankful for that. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Glee!

I love the Internet. I am now all caught up on Glee, even though we're supposed to be a few episodes behind. I am loving this show so hard, and I would totally turn straight for Kristin Chenoweth. I would have before her spot on Glee, but that just cemented it.

Oh, also, anyone who's in to musicals, you should really check out [community profile] musicals_monday. Very few members at the moment, but I think it's a really neat idea. I've been singing September 7th's edition all day.

My Desktop

There's no Deep story behind my desktop. I went looking around desktop galleries and came across this. I've had the same desktop for 5 or more years now, so I don't even remember where I got it. It started out on my laptop, then when I got my PC I used the same desktop on it.
