I'm back from holidays! They were great. In some parts more work than actual work, but great nonetheless.

Will post more tomorrow after I get a whole lot of sleep.

Yesterday I went and bought a fridge and washing machine for my new place. Luckily a friend of mine was working so we were able to wrangle a Good Deal. They'll be delivered to my new place the afternoon of my first moving day, so at least those are two fairly large items we won't have to worry about moving ourselves.

My aunt and cousin were visiting this weekend too. I took them and Mum for a drive to see my new place. I tried to ring the real estate agent to see if I could get the key to actually take them through, but none of the property management staff work on the weekends, so. We were able to peek in the windows, so they could see most of it. My aunt was really excited about it.

The last week or so I've done a bit of development stuff around Dreamwidth (as well as a bit of support). I'm such a Perl noob, but I'm slowly figuring things out. Mostly by trial and error! I banged around on things this weekend and something resembling a front end for FAQ category management fell out, which is cool. Fixed various other bugs and added small enhancements during the week too.

Pretty sure I just got asked on a date by a friend-of-a-friend via Facebook messaging. What would we do without the Internet?

It's only a week until I move! I wish it was sooner. I'm so excited to get in to my new place, but there are Rules and stuff. I realised earlier that I actually don't have all that much to pack since most of my stuff is still packed up after moving back here from Bathurst. I'm going fridge and washing machine shopping on the weekend though.

Work was pretty insane today. I built an online entry submission system for the Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs). Up until now, we hadn't heard anything from the few networks that were asked to trial the system this year. Tomorrow, however, is the closing date for entries, so of course everyone's left it until the last minute and we're getting swapped with "X is broken", "how do I do Y?" and so on.

Originally Commercial Radio Australia (the guys running the ACRAs) were going to open the system to everyone straight away. I think we're all very lucky they decided to do only a trial run this year. Testing is a Good Thing.

I expect tomorrow to be even more busy. Thankfully it's also Friday and almost the weekend!

Moving

So yes, will be moving in to my new house in about two weeks. I sign the lease on the 22nd, so it means I'll have 6 days after getting the keys until I go away for a week, but oh well. There was another application in on it and I didn't want to risk asking them if I could sign the lease after I got back in case they were eager to just get someone in and paying rent ASAP.

I was surprised to hear back so early, actually. I only dropped the application off at lunch time and the lady told me I might hear back tomorrow, but most likely not until Wednesday. Then she calls at about 3:30pm to say I'd been approved and in particular that my previous real estate agent had given me a terrific reference. Not sure what happened to the other applicant.

I'm excited about my new place. I'll be able to walk to work, which is something I was really looking for in a place. As much as I love my parents (and I really do), I am really beginning to miss having my own space. I lived on my own for two years at the start of uni and loved it; really looking forward to getting back to that.

Of course I actually have to move all my stuff. And buy a fridge. And a washing machine. And set up electricity/phone/gas/Internet/etc. No doubt I'll complain about all this a whole lot, but once it's all done and I'm moved in, it will be awesome.

Pay Rise

I'm applying to rent a property and to do it I need a statement from my employer to say that I'm not a bum without any money. I sent my boss an email over the weekend to ask him to write something up for me.

This morning, he asks me to go for a coffee to have a "chat". He starts out with the basic "How are you finding it? Anything you think we need to change? Blah blah." and we both agree that things are going really well. He then says that he's going to look over the books and see about increasing my pay.

I knew my salary was going to eventually be reviewed, but I didn't expect it for another couple of months or so. I'm obviously not getting too excited until he comes back with actual numbers, but still, any pay rise is a good pay rise, right?

I had an appointment earlier this morning to go and see a unit I'm interested in renting. I got there and there was a couple and another lady also scheduled to go in. We all wait around for a while and the agent finally turns up almost 10 minutes late.

We all get ready to go in and the agent walks up to the front door. After trying the keys, she discovers none of them fit the front door. Okay, so she tries the garage key. No deal. Tries to go around the back, finds the fence too high to climb, so tries the other side. She finds a gate. She tries to use the keys at the backdoor to no success.

After the guy from the couple tries the garage key, the agent comes up with a bright idea. She walks up to the window and tries to break in. I understand that it's not really that big a deal, but breaking in to a place is not the best way to instill confidence in potential tenants. All I could think was "If this slight, middle-aged white woman who wouldn't know the ghetto if it bit her on the ass manages to break in to this house, I'm so out of here."

Luckily for her she was unsuccessful and I'm going back tomorrow at 9am.

Holiday!

I've been working where I am for almost four months now and I'm ready for a holiday. I really like where I'm working, but I spent four years at uni having 2-3 week holidays every 10 or so weeks, and 3 months over Christmas. I also never had a full week of classes; I probably spent 15-20 hours in class on average. For good or for bad, I was also one of those students who could do well without doing much work outside of classes.

Suffice it to say that the change from the uni lifestyle to working full-time (and overtime) has been interesting. All things considered, I much prefer where I am now, because it's really made me appreciate my weekends and time off. Nevertheless, seriously ready for a holiday.

Luckily, I'm getting one in about three weeks. Like last year, Mum and Dad are going to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions horse sales and I'm tagging along. Mum and Dad won't be as busy this year though, so we'll be able to do more holiday-like things together.

A large part of the reason I like to go is just to stay in the amazing holiday-houses we rent for the week. This year we're staying in this one. I would love to own one of these houses to live in -- these people have multiple ones that they just rent out to tourists.

[livejournal.com profile] kurisuu reminded me the other day that I fail at LiveJournal. I just checked and it's been almost three months since I last updated. I think that easily qualifies as the longest time between updates since I opened my LJ in 2003.

To be honest, I've barely loaded LJ at all in the last three months, so my friends page is so far behind I'm not even going to try to catch up. If something important happened that you think I missed (I probably did), please point me to it.

I finally made it to DW ([personal profile] wyntarvox)! I've managed to grab a few names from other peoples' profiles, but if you're on DW and I missed you, let me know.

I feel like I should use the import tool to bring everything from LJ over just because the import feature seems pretty neat. On the other hand, I have a lot of junk on LJ and I'm leaning toward just leaving it there and starting fresh here on DW.
