Stargate Universe

I know I have a few Stargate fans on my flist so I want to ask, so far, what do you think of Stargate Universe?

I've watched the first three episodes so far, and the fourth is downloading as we speak for me to watch in the near future.

I'm not entirely sure what I think at this point. It's not terrible, but it just doesn't "feel" like Stargate yet. I understand that they wanted to do something different, but I was hoping it would still be recognisably the Stargate I love. I hear that they wanted something "darker", which is a great idea, and so far it's definitely heading in that direction.

I think part of what I miss, though, is the Jack/Cam/Sheppard-factor. I think Eli is supposed to be filling that role, and I do like him, but I dunno. Part of what made Jack/Cam/Sheppard so good is that they weren't supposed to be irreverent/funny/inappropriate/etc. Eli has his funny lines, but he's a young, smart kid; he's supposed to do that stuff.

I also hate Dr. Rush. I know I'm supposed to, but he's not even the "love to hate" kind of character.

It's early days and I'm definitely going to keep watching, at least for now. I'm just a bit apprehensive.

100% agreed on Rush. There are characters you love to hate and characters you hate to love, and Rush is just... I don't want him on tv. I don't like him. I would probably refuse to associate with him if I knew him in real life.

I am not watching live because I have other commitments on Friday nights but I'm planning to catch up periodically online, because I miss science fiction on tv. There was Stargate for so long, and I think even when it switched to Atlantis there were still a lot of similarities. (I have also watched other stuff like Battlestar Galactica). But I'm not sure I like the show. I'm not sure I like Eli, and I think we're supposed to, and that worries me.

I am not yet wtaching. Me and my boyfriend are currently at season 5 of Atlantis (which I never watched before because SGA was getting on my nerves) and maybe we are going to watch SGU after that.

I'm actually watching episode four as I type this. I'm really enjoying it so far, but yes, it isn't at all like Stargate. I think it's got more in common with Battlestar than Stargate.

I love Eli, can't stand Dr Rush, but willing to put up with him because I love the actor. Haven't really gotten to 'know' any other characters yet though - whether I like the series long term will depend on whether I get to like anyone other than Eli.
