To my non-Australian friends (particularly Americans), if someone told you something was 'true blue', would you understand what that meant? Even if you would personally, is it something the unwashed masses would get?

I think it's commonly understood by all native English speakers that "true blue" = loyalty. Out of curiosity, I Googled it and the origin seems pretty specific.
